Amy Porter and Albany Symphony record "Trail of Tears" for all-Daugherty CD on NAXOS

Amy Porter is the featured flute soloist in Michael Daugherty’s Trail of Tears on an all-Daugherty CD recorded by the Albany Symphony Orchestra and scheduled for release in March 2018 on the NAXOS label. The dramatic flute concerto depicts the forced removal of Native Americans from their ancestral lands in the American southeast during the 1830s, and, in Daugherty’s words, provides “a musical journey into how the human spirit discovers ways to deal with upheaval, adversity, and adapting to a new environment.”

Ms. Porter premiered Trail of Tears in 2010 with the Omaha Symphony under Thomas Wilkins, and subsequently brought it to numerous other orchestras including the Albany Symphony, where she performed it on May 16, 2015, under Music Director David Alan Miller.

Also featured on the CD are two other prominent female instrumentalists. Evelyn Glennie is the soloist in Daugherty’s Dreamachine for solo percussion and orchestra. Reflections on the Mississippi for tuba and orchestra showcases the solo talents of Carol Jantsch, principal tuba in the Philadelphia Orchestra.
