Violinist Francisco Fullana, soloist and Artist-in-Residence with the Cleveland-based baroque ensemble Apollo's Fire, delivers a superb interpretation of Vivaldi's The Four Seasons in a newly released CD.
The recording, Fullana's first with the acclaimed early music group, debuted at #2 on the Billboard classical music chart. It also received high praise across the pond, with music critic Hugh Canning placing it at #3 in The Times' 10 Best Classical Albums of 2021.
Canning had this to say about the album, which features Fullana in top form alongside harpsichordist and music director Jeanette Sorrell:
After “countless” live performances of this most famous of baroque collections, Sorrell and her dazzling period band from Cleveland commit Vivaldi’s concertos to disc. The musical results are revelatory. Sorrell’s booklet notes, which conclude that Vivaldi wrote his most famous pieces for Venice’s Ospedale della Pieta, are as fascinating as her soloist Fullana’s virtuosic playing, but it’s her orchestra’s incandescence — graphic in the “barking dog” movement of Spring, exhilarating in Summer’s cascading rainstorm — that makes this essential listening.
